Meeting Mr. Waite

This week I got the outstanding privilege to interview our new assistant principal. Turns out he’s a really cool dude. Believe it or not, he was a starting point guard in the Championship team at Wesley College. So, of course he loves our Brandywine Basketball team. He was actually born in Turkey, because his father was in the air force. Before he was our assistant principal, he was in business and worked with people all day. He told me that he was a manager and so that’s why he’s so good at working with the Bulldogs here at Brandywine. “When I was your age I enjoyed Science most”, he reflects. Mr. Waite’s favorite music is R&B like Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, Michael Jackson, and Luther Vandross. When speaking to him he said that he was inspired by the students of Brandywine his first days here. He loves our school, getting to know each and every one of us, and the “rich diversity and tremendous talent” of our school. Keep it up Bulldogs and say “hey” next time you see him!

Let it snow, Let it snow...

When snow is predicted in Delaware the inevitable happens. The little skill Delaware drivers do have is gone. Accidents are happening faster than you can ask your parents if school is cancelled.

So, I have a question for Brandywine. Why is this problem not being addressed?

Being required to attend school when snow is on the ground is frustrating as it is. Although the main roads have probably been plowed and salted, our neighborhoods most likely have not been. This makes it difficult as well as unsafe to leave neighborhoods and try to get to school when you don't even want to be going in the first place. But, if you do leave your neighborhood unscathed you are mistaken if you think you've put the worst behind you...

The Brandywine Parking Lot has been quite the controversy this year and its problems have been brought to attention many times (with nothing done about them). Whether its the ridiculous mornings or the frantic afternoons, the system is very far from perfect. Yet, the danger only doubles when snow has fallen. The mediocre plow and salt job on our parking lot is far from okay. With about one half of the drivers entering the parking lot being student drivers, the amount of experience required to safely navigate throughout the parking lot is severely lacking.

So, my question is this: If we are being forced to come to school in unsafe conditions isn't it fair to at least expect the parking lot to be plowed and salted WELL?

Frankly, I see it like this. We wake up, slide around on ice trying to get out of the neighborhood, coast on Foulk road at a whopping 20 miles an hour and then hope your Honda Civic can take on the capabilities of a truck in order to drive over the piles of snow in the parking lot. This is not just humorous, it is ludicrous. It is completely unfair to live up to the expectations of coming to school in these unsafe conditions in the first place but being forced to face these obstacles in the parking lot too is preposterous.

Hopefully, something will changed soon before someone's car does...

Spring Dance?

Every year, seniors walk off to prom in their hot tuxedos and beautiful dresses as underclassmen look on enviously. What better way to make the underclassmen shine then by having a Semi-Formal Spring Dance, just for us? Not only would it give us a boost of confidence but it would also benefit all the underclassmen’s funds. I got the privilege to meet with Dr. Thompson, Mr. Rolph, and Mr. Waite to talk about having a Spring Dance. The three men were very pro- Spring Dance. But, Dr.T made it a point that it would only be for underclassmen, so we would feel important too.

Also, in my meeting, I got the clarifications on the Spring Dance. It would be only for underclassmen, and it would be semi-formal, which is basically how we all dressed for home-coming. “This dance,” Dr. Thompson says, “is not only just to have a dance but to demonstrate social growth”. He went on to say that the profit from the dance would benefit all the classes for their prom.

Students are all for the idea. Katie Bennett, grade 11, says ‘In theory it would be good, but I don’t think there would be a turn out. Like, I don’t think people would show up”. This not only shows some slight enthusiasm, but shows some of the worry the students are having. What’s your opinion? Leave a comment and say what you think about the idea of a Spring Semi-Formal Dance for the underclassmen. Go Bulldogs!
